UK Computer Users Failing to Backup Data

According to a new study undertaken by storage device manufacturer Verbatim, 1 in 5 people in the UK, lose priceless data each year as a result of a failure to backup their electronic devices such as PCs, phone, tablets etc.

Data can be lost for a variety of reasons including hardware failure, accidental damage, computer viruses and software corruption, meaning whether you are a business or personal user, procedures need to be put in place to protect important data.

In terms of specifics of the survey, which involved questioning 1000 adults across the UK:

  • 1 in 5 persons don’t backup their computers while approximately a third don’t backup their mobile phones;
  • The top 4 concerns for UK users are losing pictures, personal documents, videos and music;
  • 1 in 5 persons have lost personal data on their computer or smart phone within the past 12 months; and
  • Men are more likely to back up their devices than women.

Commenting on the study, Rüdiger Theobald of Verbatim, said:

“Having the hard drive on your PC crash can be a traumatic experience. It’s not difficult to do regular backups. There’s a plethora of hardware and software solutions available for backing up, and innumerable tutorials and advice on the internet. Backup and restore is even built into the latest version of Microsoft Windows and requires just three clicks of the mouse. Apple offers similar functionality with Time Machine..

 “..Computer data recovery is a tricky business. Where physical failure has occurred, and the hard drive needs to be worked on in a cleanroom, typical costs can be in excess of £500 and there’s no guarantee all the data will be recovered..

The research by Verbatim was carried out to coincide with World Backup Day.
